Dolophilodes distinctus wingless female - Dolophilodes distinctus - Mad River, 2 km SW Farmington, Strafford County, New Hampshire, USA April 20, 2008 Size: 5 mm
A much better photo. I again found one wet in my kick sample, but let her dry out with a small piece of moist tissue in a film canister. During photography I noticed that three males were madly investigating the tissue that she had been in, so she must have been producing some pheromone while incarcerated.
Females are nearly wingless during the winter (see the very short wing stubs), and are fully winged like males during the warmer months.
Dry/terrestrial specimens are sure a lot easier to photograph than ones kept in water like the larvae I am usually after.
