Notolomus bicolor - male - female

Notolomus bicolor - Male Female
Captiva Is, Lee County, Florida, USA
March 23, 2008
Size: 2.1-3.4 mm
These little weevils are known as palm pollinators, Serenoa repens and others. The local Serenoa repens were heavily in flower, but these flew to my UV light at night. Oddly, all the females (on the left) were very pale. The males (right) varied in color. They could be identified definitively using Blatchley and Leng (1916). The males have thornlike projections on the side of thorax.
