I understand why ectotherms need to do it during the day, but why right in the middle of the hiking path?

Eleodes?
Stink bug, Eleodes sp., perhaps?

Is that an insect in the lower left corner or leaf litter?

Reminds me of Dudley Moore in the movie "10".
In one scene, he's decrying the lack of romance in contemporary times, stating...

"Can you imagine a couple, twenty years from now, listening to oldies? The man says 'Oh, honey, they're playing our song - Why Don't We Do It In The Road?'"

(I should mention it's a Beatles song. LOL!)
