Black Swallowtail disasterous eclosure - Papilio polyxenes - female

Black Swallowtail disasterous eclosure - Papilio polyxenes - Female
Burlington Township, Burlington County, New Jersey, USA
April 23, 2008
his is one of two black swallowtails that I've been monitoring in my fennel planter since last year. This one's chrysalis never formed properly--I actually thought it was dead and the chrysalis lying on the dirt/leaf litter all winter. I was shocked when I came home today to find it walking around the planter. Poor thing...

on a better note, the other one is still attached to it's "hammock" and I'm thinking may eclose soon as we're expecting 80 degree days ahead.
