Grasshopper Illinois April - Chortophaga viridifasciata

Size: About 1.5 inches long
This hopper was sitting in an open (grass and forb) area that borders a stretch of deciduous forest.

Chortophaga viridifasciata male
These overwinter as nymphs, so are one of first grasshoppers to be seen as adults in spring. Lots of photos here on BugGuide now.
