Rove Beetle and guest. Please help with Rove Beetle ID plus what is that other critter ? What is the Rove Beetle doing ? Is it stalking the little guy ?

Interesting
This is from the subfamily Paederinae. Unfortunately a genus doesn't come to mind at the moment. With a photo like this I am sure someone else can drop a genus on it at least. The 'guest' is an aphid and it's possible that your rove beetle is hungry as they do eat aphids. Unfortunately aphids are largely 'empty calories'...I wonder if aphid honeydew tastes sweet to a beetle?
