Paper Wasp - Polistes dorsalis

These were hard shots. I had to hold this leaf still because it was so windy.

Nest under a leaf
I saw an empty nest just like this in Texas, now I know what it was. Well maybe more than one species build nests under leaves, but still it is nice to see one with its occupants.

I have found a lot of these since...
I never knew wasp would build a nest under a leaf. It didn't seem like a good place to build. Then one day it dawned on me... Where did wasp build nest before buildings? I felt dumb for not realizing that before...

It bothered me when I saw the first one like this because I am allergic to wasp. Every one I saw was only a couple of feet off of the ground and would be hard to notice if you we standing or walking. No telling how many I disturbed with all of the crawling around in the woods I do.

I wanted these shots bad enough to hold the leaf in my hand because there was a stiff breeze that day.
