Saw fly ?? - Dilophus occipitalis - Female
Manteca, San joaquin County, California, USA
April 1, 2008
Size: 1/4 "
I found this little guy eating something off of the back end of a japanese beetle on a rose bush . I had never seen this insect before . I got it on my hand and took a photo , but it looks kind of like a Flea or Tick to me and is rather ugly , but looking in the Bugguide I thought I saw a similar insect labeled Sawfly . Is this a Sawfly or something else ?? It looks like a bad bug to me , thanks for any comments , sincerely Bugsys posy

You probably figured it out by now...
...but just thought I'd mention that, although it may have initially looked like a "bad bug", these bibionid flies are harmless to us hominids :-)

Moved from Dilophus.

Moved from March Flies.

Nope
Not a sawfly. It's a female march fly, family Bibionidae.
There are other pictures of these flies in the guide!
greetings
