Small Milkweed Bug - Oncopeltus fasciatus

Small Milkweed Bug - Oncopeltus fasciatus
Richmond County, North Carolina, USA
April 27, 2008
Size: ~2cm
Feasting on a burning bush. I couldn't tell if it was drinking nectar but this is what all but the catepillars were seen to be doing. MOTO

Moved
Moved from Small Milkweed Bug.

We would say rather
the Large Milkweed Bug, in the guide here

{***} Milkweed Bug
I'm new at naming bugs. When I read through the directory and found my bug I was under the impressions that Small Milkweed Bug was its name. You are correct that this guy is big. I really need to measure it to give the correct length. MOTO

Not size- species
There's another species with the common name Large Milkweed Bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus. They tend to be larger then the Small Milkweed Bug, which is where the common name comes from. The markings are quite different.

Got it. Not just size but markings and, most importantly, species. Thanks for the clarification and I will correct the name in my flickr web site. MOTO
