Tick - Dermacentor

Tick - Dermacentor
Redwood City, San Mateo County, California, USA
April 27, 2008
Size: 4 mm
Found this tick on my wife's neck! Not sure if it came from the dog or whether I brought it in the house from my ramblings in the wild.
Adult? Dermacentor sp.? Sorry for poor focus - have specimen preserved in alcohol and will try to get a better photo later this week...

Dermacentor
Given the locality, it's probably Dermacentor occidentalis. - Barry

Moved temporarily
to genus. Will try to get better photo and may send out for definite ID...

Female tick,
in the genus Dermacentor. Mostly likely D. andersoni or even D. variabilis.

Thanks, Jon!
I have preserved this specimen in EtOH - are there any images I can get that would help with determining andersoni versus variabilis??
