Pepper Plant Insect - Jadera haematoloma

Pepper Plant Insect - Jadera haematoloma
Orlando, Orange County, Florida, USA
May 21, 2005
Size: 1/4 to 1/2 inch
I have noted this particular bug in my yard many times. As of late I have noted them on my Habanero plants. Something is eating the leaves of my plants and at the moment this is the only insect I can find on them. Before I try eradicating them I would like to make sure they are not beneficial insects and eating some little critters I can not see. I've watched them for a bit and to be honest all I ever see them do is "stand around" :-) They are a dull black in color with red eyes, 2 red markings on the thorax(?), and on their lower back. Does anyone have an idea as to what this insect is and if it eats plants? Thanks!

Reminds us
of Rhopalidae. see, but scroll through the images of Hemiptera here and see the wonderful diversity of this order

That's it!
Thanks for the identification. After reading about them here http://sarasota.extension.ufl.edu/IPM/Jadera.htm I don't think they are to blame for my pepper plant problems. Thanks again!
