What kind of bee? - Hoplitis

What kind of bee? - Hoplitis
Durham, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
April 25, 2008
Size: less than 1"
This bee has white eyes! Can anyone help me identify it? I wonder if the white eyes are an identifying character or if this is just an oddball mutant.

Hoplitis (Alcidamea) male
probably H. pilosifrons (if not, then the very similar H. productus, but the long sternal projection of H. productus is not visible in the image)
