rove beetle - Gabrius
Woodford, Bennington County, Vermont, USA
May 1, 2008
Size: ~4mm

Moved
Moved from Erichsonius.
Thanks for correcting this one Adam. I know it's difficult identifying all these roves from photos alone.

Was browsing the guide a bit
Was browsing the guide a bit - this is Gabrius! Hard to say exactly which. It sort of looks like E. patella at first glance but the head is much too sparsely punctate for an Erichsonius. It seems I have improved quite a bit on my 'gestalt' recognition since 2008... Now it's almost embarrassing that I mis-ID'd this.

Adam

Thanks Adam
I never noticed that swollen second antennomere. The beetle is a little too small for me to get a good enough look at to see if the translucent triangle is there.

Erichsonius
This is almost certainly a species of Erichsonius : distinct habitus, swollen 2nd antennomere, distinctive punctation on pronotum (characteristic of several northeastern Erichsonius spp.). On the actual specimen a thin, translucent triangle should be present behind the forefemur (a postcoxal process). Confirmation on the postcoxal process would make this a 100% certainty, as the related and similar Neo*bisnius species sometimes have similar antennae.
