Balsam Woolly Adelgid - Adelges piceae

I would like to suggest a new page for Balsam Woolly Adelgid - Adelges piceae (BWA). In 2006 I was part of a team that visited an abandoned Christmas tree farm in Barachois and an active farm in Perry Settlement in southeastern New Brunswick for research on a field guide on pests of Balsam Fir Christmas trees (here).

The following images were taken on 15 Aug 2006 at 2 locations in New Brunswick. The extremely distorted trees are located in Barachois (near Shediac), Westmorland County, NB, not far from the Nova Scotia border where the insect is more common. This farm was the first or one of the first to be infected with BWA. Normally a tree farmer removes these trees as soon as BWA is detected. These, however, were abandoned and let go, subsequently growing to extreme distortion. There is one image of actual adelgids on a stem.

The second set was taken at a farm in Perry Settlement, Kings Co, NB, on the same day, and depict trees in early stages of damage (problems with the leaders), and a nearby mature tree that has undoubtedly acted an the source for much of the infection. Even trees that are not noticeably affected are probably infected.

I hope
that you get a chance to add some close ups of the creatures. We really need that .

New guide page
Our normal practice is to have the photos posted first, and then to create the guide page. Are you going to post some photos of this species, or maybe you already have and I missed them in my search?

The critters are the white fuzzy dots on the stem of one of the trees, as seen in a close-up.

Hi Chris,
I'm not understanding you. Do we have photos of this species posted to BugGuide?

The images are posted in Adel
The images are posted in Adelgidae > Adelges.

Thanks,
I've created a guide page.
