Bug - Apiomerus californicus

Size: about 2.5cm
This bug was spotted in a hole in the dirt in grassland, which upon some excavation by someone turned out to be active with ants. The bug got out of there quick since the ants got riled up. It has some debris on it.
The underside where the legs join the body was red.
