Red-spotted Purple Caterpillar? - Limenitis arthemis

Red-spotted Purple Caterpillar? - Limenitis arthemis
Louisa County, Virginia, USA
April 25, 2008
Size: approx 1 - 1.5 in.
This was crawling along the siding above the garage door. The surrounding area is wooded - mostly oaks and sweet gum with occasional beech, black gum and maples.

Red-spotted Purple
Moved from Butterflies.

Looks to be Viceroy
or Red-Spotted Purple. The kind of woods in the surrounding area might help decide if we can't tell from the spikeyness.

Probably Red-Spotted Purple
I looked at some of my other photos, but none was any sharper than this one. I amended the photo description with the type of trees in the surrounding area - no willows, poplars, or cottonwoods, and a very few small wild cherries - so I'm guessing this is likely Red-Spotted Purple. I've seen Red-Spotted Purple adults in this same area, but no Viceroys.
