Polistes apachus

Polistes apachus
Huntington Beach, Orange County, California, USA
March 23, 2003

Moved
Moved from Polistes.

Polistes apachus, nest (CA)
Note yellow stripes on scutum and largely yellow pronotum.

Paper wasps.
These are paper wasps in the genus Polistes. Hard to know what species, perhaps a subspecies of P. fuscatus. Great image of the whole nest. Brave lady:-) Well, at least one of these wasps is "on alert."

thanks
for your help and comments. It was one of my more daring shoots -- standing on a chair with my arms out in front of me to get in as close as possible! I'm glad they didn't decide to chase me off, but more important was happy that the pictures weren't blurred from my shaking ;)
