Grass spider ? - Sosippus californicus

Grass spider ? - Sosippus californicus
Pleasanton / Sunol, Alameda County, California, USA
May 4, 2008
Size: 3/4"
I have seen many of these funnel webs along the hillside . Sometimes I see the spider lounging at the entrance , but they are usually shy and retreat when approached . I went up slow and quiet , put my camera way up the wide funnel entrance and this fellow stayed watching . I took a few shots and then he leaped out of his funnel whereupon I backed up , then went in again for the side shot . Is this called a Grass spider or is there a Funnel web spider ??

Funnel Web Wolf Spider
The eye arrangement says wolf spider. There is a Genus Sosippus - Funnel Web Wolf Spiders here, although I'm not sure that's what this is. You should wait for someone else to confirm.

I agree.
This is not an agelenid, which leaves Sosippus as the only logical alternative. Good call, Lynette.
