Galls? - Acericecis ocellaris

Galls? - Acericecis ocellaris
Norfolk, Virginia, USA
May 5, 2008
Size: 12mm
Or fungus of some sort? The center area is raised. Found on maple leaf.

Cool image!
Joyce Gross can often help out with possible galls. Whatever it is, it's a great pattern!

Thanks!
I saw quite a number of these and realized they could be galls, so I took this image.

If you have a good hand lens -
you could try slicing the raised area in half with a sharp knife and taking a look at what's inside...

A quick web search
suggests that this could be a "maple eyespot gall"?? If so, it is caused by a gall midge (Acericecis ocellaris). Would be a new genus for BG - but please wait for an expert to comment...

Maple eyespot galls
That's what I was going to say (not that I'm an expert).
Nice composition! Really emphasizes the eye-ness of the spots.

I've got them, too...
I noticed these eyespots on maple tree leaves in the backyard yesterday. I am glad to find out what they are.
