black and brown ant - Dolichoderus plagiatus

black and brown ant - Dolichoderus plagiatus
West Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA
May 19, 2008
Size: 4mm

Thanks Richard
Either this ant's common, or I'm attracted to the colorful ants.

Dolichoderus plagiatus - worker
This one has a very extensive yellow marking on T1 and T2. Maybe color will still darken a little in this individual. This beautiful little ant seems to be fairly common in your region.

Surprisingly common!
To me, anyway. This critter is vanishingly rare in my area, east-central Missouri.

Not abundant, but
I usually do get a few of these ants when I sweep net through low tree branches, and other leafy vegetation.
