Chrysomelid - Calligrapha ignota

Chrysomelid - Calligrapha ignota
Longmeadow, Massachusetts, USA
May 21, 2008
Sitting on a wood nettle, but not feeding on it. This was in a floodplain forest, so I imagine it's one of the ones that eats cottonwood.

Definitely Calligrapha but without a host plant it will be nearly impossible to key down further. The living color pattern is likely distinct for this species but at present this character is not used for identification. Unfortunately because it is a flood plain there are numerous possible hosts: Cornus, Ostrya, Alnus, Tilia, Ulmus, Prunus, Crataegus, etc. The up side being that once you have figured out what plant it is on you should have no problem finding specimens and getting a definative ID.

Calligrapha sp?
Nice shot of what I suspect is a species of Calligrapha. Out here in the west, though, some Leptinotarsa species are easily confused for them!

The C. ignota images looked pretty close to me, and then I checked out this reference that Boris linked to in his response on one of them, and I got to C. alnicola (which I can't find an image to verify). I'm not in Canada though; also, this assumes that I understand correctly what the epipleurae are. I've attached a side view...
