Large Fly andWasp Mimic - Mydas clavatus

Large Fly andWasp Mimic - Mydas clavatus
Prairie Unit, Lake County, Florida, USA
May 19, 2008
Size: 32 mm
As soon as I stopped my vehicle in the woods to begin looking for insects, this fly swiftly flew by me in a defensive and territorial maneuver. I was able to spot three of them patroling an area. When I walked about 50 yards away, one of them followed me and landed in front of me almost daring me to get closer to it. Any comments on the behavior of these handsome flies would be appreciated.
