Size: 2 inches
Am thinking moth or sawfly larva...but not sure. This was feeding on a native vine that grows on mesquite trees. Don't know the name of the vine but it is extremely stinky.

Looks a bit like
Xerociris wilsonii (Wilson's Wood-nymph Moth - Hodges#9298)
