Cuterebra lepivora
Clearly a rabbit bot by the red eyes. Likely Cuterebra lepivora which is a very coastal loving species in CA. Hosts are thought to be Sylvilagus audubonii and S. nuttallii, but not a lot known about this species. I love your picture with the feel of being so close to the coast. You likely might see this species in the same area if you return to the same spot around the same time of day, and same time of month, in future years. Most bot species "lek" or find mates at high points such as this. This is a pretty rare fly, with not a lot known about it. Great find.

Very nice find Wendy. This is a bot fly. See
here
. I'm still waiting to see my first live one in the field. Once found one dead in a spider web.

bot fly
Amazing! Any idea what this kind might parasitize? Are they all parasitic? There were cows about 1/2 miles away. Other mammals in the area would be bobcats, deer, skunks, coyotes, jack rabbits and bursh rabbits, and small rodents.
