Size: about 8.7 mm
until it spread its wings. Then I thought, now where have I seen scarlet beetle wings before?" The answer is leaf beetle genus Zygogra*mma.

This fellow was perched on the inside back of a chair that someone had just arisen from. It's a wonder he wasn't crushed.
