Citronella Ant Wings - Lasius - female

Citronella Ant Wings - Lasius - Female
Bear, New Castle County, Delaware, USA
May 25, 2008
Size: ~ 8 mm
I observed an Ant "struggling" and as I approached her it looked like she was rubbing herself against the top of a tiled table. A couple of seconds later, I realized that she just shed her wings. How does an ant decide when its time to break off her wings and are they basically used to find a "home" and after that they are no longer needed?
