Is this a male M. macrurus?

These were all over a dead tree trunk. No females, just dozens of males all landing on the trunk. They looked like they were feeding on something coming from the tree but others were just standing there doing nothing.

We seem to remember someone
reporting that the males show up when the females are about to emerge. There must be chemistry in the air that lets them know the females are digging their way out!

Also, unfortunately, apparently the males of the different species are very difficult to tell apart.
