Robber Fly with Blackfly prey - Holopogon

Robber Fly with Blackfly prey - Holopogon
Spring Green Preserve SNA, Sauk County, Wisconsin, USA
May 31, 2008
Size: ~ 1/3 inch
Saw many of these flies this day on the open sandy oak barrens and into the hardwood forest. Found mostly on the ends of small brown stems close to ground. Not very skittish at all. My P&S was having difficulty focusing on this individual while it was perched on a stem, so I gently ran my fingers up the stem until the fly climbed aboard. It allowed me to take these pics and then flew off to finish its meal.

I believe it to be Holopogon.

The question becomes muddy again on the Holopogon phaenotus versus oriens. By the mid-leg this looks like oriens. I think both occur up there.

Thanks
Thanks Herschel. I'll move to genus for now.
