Machimus - female

Machimus - Female
Naples (Golden Gate Estates), Collier County, Florida, USA
May 16, 2005
Size: Approx. 1 inch
This robber fly was attracted to our patio light. I was always under the impression that robber flies were diurnal. If no one can narrow this down to species, what about gender at least? This one doesn't have the distinct bulbous genitalia of a male, but I am still reluctant to commit to a gender.

??

Thanks.

Robber
Robbers will come to lights for the insects like other predators. They don't usually hunt at night otherwise. This is in the Asilini group with Machimus and Dicropaltum, etc. Florida has a nice collection of these. This is a female.

Thanks very much, Herschel.
Thanks very much, Herschel. It seems like Florida has a nice collection of just about everything! I am having a hard time keeping up, but I enjoy trying.
