Unknown eggs in May have hatched - Automeris io

Unknown eggs in May have hatched - Automeris io
Cass County, Texas, USA
June 2, 2008
Size: a few mm each
I brought this clutch of eggs inside and after about 10 days, they hatched. I noticed that the host plant seemed to hold up very well in a container of water. No wilting after almost 2 weeks. I originally just had the one stem on which the eggs were attached but after hatching, I went back for more foliage to help feed the new caterpillars. It was late in the day and I discovered that the leaves of the plant, fold up against the stems at night.

With any luck, someone will positively identify the species and maybe I can then research what I need to do so the caterpillars will form cocoons.

Moved
Moved from Moths.

Even if you don't get an ID
the procedure's similar for raising all caterpillars. I wrote an article on it for this site. See here.

Now they look even more like Io moth
See Alan's . Notice he suggests palm and hibiscus as food
