hissing beetle - Polyphylla decemlineata

hissing beetle - Polyphylla decemlineata
Shandon, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA
June 1, 2008
Size: 1.5" +/-
This beetle was found under a hedge (at least we assume it is a beetle). We are in an arid climate (approx 12" rain annually.) This beetle, when agitated, raises the back end of its shell and emits a short hissing noise, like a spray from an aerosol can. We do not detect an odor when it hisses.

common june bug
specifically Polyphylla decemlineata
