Stag Beetle - Lucanus placidus

Stag Beetle - Lucanus placidus
Grand Rapids,, Kent County, Burton Heights Neighborhood County, Michigan, USA
June 3, 2008
Size: About 28 to 30 mm long
I actually found it crawling around in the bottom of the kitchen waste basket. I took him out to the deck and let him go. He was nice enough to set still so I could take several photos. I then took him and the flora he had grabbed an set him down in the middle of the perennial garden. As powerful and intimidating as he looks I would hope that he is a powerful predator who can be of help in controlling garden pests?
