Sooty Long-wing (or Black-wing Shield-back) nymph - Capnobotes fuliginosus - male

Sooty Long-wing (or Black-wing Shield-back) nymph - Capnobotes fuliginosus - Male
Tierra Grande, se. Valencia County, New Mexico, USA

Last instar male. Not quite so inclined to inflict painful bites when still nymphs (adults can draw blood). They come to the lights and hang out on tall shrubs waiting to feast on other smaller creatures that come, while the males produce a chorus of their loud rasping/ticking song. They are really neat, and the black wings of the adults are rather striking. When I was in college, we used to drive south from Colorado and hunt Katydids in the desert by driving slowly up and down the roads listening for them at night. This was one of my favorites. Now I have them in my yard late every spring.
