Black Spider with long pedipalps - Ummidia

Black Spider with long pedipalps - Ummidia
Baton Rouge - BREC Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
May 31, 2008
Size: 3/4 inch
Fairly large spider.
Not counting legs, about 3/4 inch long
Walking thru leaf litter on ground in forested area.
Pedipalps are so long it looks like it has 10 legs.
Seems to have a shield over its head.

John

Moved
Moved from Spiders.

Mouse spider?
It looks big enough to be one.

Trap-door spider
One of the trap-door spiders.

Looks like it might be from Ummidia.

It is Ummidia.
The saddle-shaped depression on the "knee" of the third leg, clearly visible in this image, is diagnostic.

Thanks to both of you.
I didn't even know we had trapdoor spiders in Louisiana.
Fun to learn that we do.

I read that males wander some, looking for females, so I guess this is a male. Next time I will try to follow one and see if I find a trap door.
