Moth Fly - Synanthedon acerni

Moth Fly - Synanthedon acerni
Montgomery, Orange County, New York, USA
June 1, 2008
Size: 13 -16 mm
Looks kind of like a fly, and kind of like a moth. Which is it? Is it either?

It looks so much like a Scorp
It looks so much like a Scorpion fly from a distance... great pic!

I'd go with Maple Callus Borer
I'd go with Synanthedon acerni - Maple Callus Borer - Hodges#2554.

if not that one, still in the Synanthedon genus. Btw, it is definitely a moth.

Synanthedon acerni
This is Synanthedon acerni, most likely a female. It's one of the most common clearwings in eastern North America and the only sesiid attracted to lights. This picture should be moved to species page.

not S. acerni?
The distal light color on the antennae, and the dark wing tips, don't look right for S. acerni. What about Carmenta, maybe Carmenta corni.
