Size: 2 inches
Can anyone help me ID this robber fly?
I was so excited when I saw him, but he didn't let me get very close before he flew away. :o(((
It was the first one I've ever seen.
Thanks!

Moved

It is
The bugguide favorite, Diogmites neoternatus.

Hi Herschel
Since you told me that robber flies are the Bugguide favorite.... I have noticed how many are posted!!! :o)

Thanks guys!

Why bugguide favorite? Do lots of people post robber flies? It's the first one I've ever seen.... and I've looked at bugs my whole life!

More than 2200 robber flies are posted here.
Yours, however, is just the second of its species to be posted from Florida. Check out the Data tab - where and when stuff - and Images -counts by genus, family, species - for info like this. (For counts on images, go to the last page. Add the number of images on that page to the number at the far right of the URL to get a total for that particular category.)

ID
Nice portrait. Maybe Diogmites.
