I'm jealous! We saw this species in 2002, when we were beginning our collection of scans of LA Odonata. We haven't seen it since!
Go to this page in Bill Mauffray's paper on LA Odonata and read the data on this species. I first thought that this was an eastern range extension, but I see in the TX guide that it is known for MS. Yours is the first LA photo for BugGuide.

Thanks for the identification and the kind words! I had to follow this guy through thickets, mud and thorns for quite some time to get the picture. He definitely made me work for it! But after he decided to let me catch him, he stayed still for a long time. It wasn't 10 yards from where he sat to where I found the female.
