slender black fly - Bibio - male

slender black fly - Bibio - Male
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Size: approx 8mm
I saw this one grooming (I think) and it was able to bend its abdomen right around in a c-shape to do so.

I'm guessing this is a male as its eyes meet on top of its head. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Moved
Moved from March Flies.

Yes.
It is a male, probably a march fly, family Bibionidae.

ID
Yep, Bibionidae.

Thanks for the ID
to both.

I'm very much a novice at flies, but they are the most numerous and varied visitors to my tiny yard, so I guess I'd better start learning them!

Good!
Nice shot, per your norm. I'm looking forward to your fly posts.

Thanks for the compliment
I'm still using a point-and-shoot so my images are never as sharp as I'd like, but on a still day (with no children grabbing at my knees) I do OK. : )
