Size: ~4-5 cm
There were hundreds of these butterflies along a trail that runs alongside a creek in Los Padres NF. I think this image is of a female Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona)?

I know little about it other than the books but everything, even the body colors and white spots on the abdomen seem to match.
