Asian Woolly Hackberry Aphid - Shivaphis celti - female

Asian Woolly Hackberry Aphid - Shivaphis celti - Female
Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, USA
May 21, 2005
Size: 2mm
Eric and I discovered a colony of these woolly aphids in the garden behind our Inn while visiting Los Angeles for the bug fair. Our host identified the host tree as hackberry.

The aphids seemed to be supporting a whole community of other interesting critters. We spotted quite a few Harmonia axyridis. Seems somewhat fitting that one Asian import would be feasting on another.

Given the time of year, the adults would have all been female.

See guide page for references used for identification.
