hairy cat-generalist - Arctia caja

hairy cat-generalist - Arctia caja
Rensselaerville, Albany County, New York, USA

Size: 6 cm
I found this caterpillar on two non-native herbaceous plant species, sweet-clover and stinging nettle, that were growing on the gravely stream bench in the decidous mixed forest.

Moved

There are some arctiids that are brown
with long white hairs such as and . We don't know if your is either of these, but it's a place to start.

Tiger moth larva
It's either Platyprepia virginalis (or a related species, i'm not sure what you have in the East) or Arctia caja, though the reddish hairs on the latero-ventral side and the white spiracles suggest it might be A. caja. You should try rearing it. It will feed on pretty much any kind of weed or low-growing plant. Adults of both species are quite striking and are picture-worthy.
