Mite?? Bug??

Mite?? Bug??
Bridgewater, Somerset County, New Jersey, USA
June 3, 2008
Size: appx 1/8 inch
I can't decide if this is a Spider Mite or a Velvet Mite or something else. I've approximated the size again. There were two of these guys on a large red garden pot in my back yard. The other one was smaller than the head of a straight pin. I promise to improve my observation skills for future subjects, but I need more information on other insects that I have already photographed. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated because I do share my photos with my Art Community (Artellawordsandart)and a Photography Magazine (JPG).

Thanks, Juliebear

Not an ID -
but I would agree that there seem to be eight legs and I would suspect that this is a mite of some sort and not an insect... Sorry I can't help more - this isn't a bad image, but it's tough to get great images of something this small...

Absolutely...
...that this is a mite.
Hands down.
It might be an erythraeoid mite or a relative, but yes this is a (relatively poor photo). Probably not your fault, this looks like the kind of effect that happens when the camera tries to capture a moving target. Happens to me all the time (with worse visual consequences, too).

Erythraeidae
Nice ID! Yea... these mites can be fast, and very difficult to photograph.
