Thanks for the input so far
I had been thinking along the Russet Alder leaf beetle but thought there just wasnt enough white on it. I am very weak in beetle ID and saw other writings about the larger number of Calligrapha around.

It seems everyone is agreeing that Calligrapha fits for sure. If someone is confident on the Russet Alder part, it hasnt been documented for wisconsin at bugguide yet.

how odd...
...it looks like a dogwood beetle with a pigment issue or something on it's back. I'm not sure, it's very strange to see those markings with that burnt red color.

Calligrapha...
...Arthur Evans, "Field Guide to Insects and Spiders" says there are more than 80 species of Calligrapha in the New World. Bound to be a red one in that bunch somewhere...wish I could find one at my house!

yeah, it's more that it looks
yeah, it's more that it looks like it's painted on or pealing off that struck me. That and the pattern is so close to the common dogwood.

Since you mention alder,
You might check out Russet Alder Leaf Beetle - Calligrapha alni, in the guide here. Don't forget to stroll through the guide when you're looking for an ID. This one jumps right out atcha!
