Robber fly? - Nicocles rufus

Robber fly? - Nicocles rufus
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
June 1, 2005
Any help on info for this insect would be appreciated. Thanks

Robber Fly 18990
This is a female Nicocles rufus, a species of the Pacific coast from southwestern BC to California. In BC it is known only from southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands in Garry Oak/Douglas-fir woodland and is considered rather rare. It is probably more common in the US.

Robber fly 19823
Hi again Rob. Could you give me any info on another robber fly #19823 that you may know a little about. Thanks for you info. on the other one, really appreciated.

Robber Fly 18990
Thank you so much for the info on this species. Nice to be in touch with someone in this area.

Asilidae.
Yes, this is most definitely a robber fly! You can clearly see the deep depression between the eyes, a distinctive feature on asilids. Have no idea even what genus this is, perhaps one of our fly experts can help there. Thanks again for being virtually our sole "voice in the wilderness" of the Pacific Northwest!
