Flying Insect with the longest threadlike tail I've ever seen - Megarhyssa atrata

Flying Insect with the longest threadlike tail I've ever seen - Megarhyssa atrata
Lake Mendota/Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
June 11, 2008
Size: 6 " long w/tail

Check out Megarhyssa atrata
in the guide here. The "tail" (not a stinger!)is her ovipositor. It allows her to reach deep into the wood to lay eggs on larvae there. What a beautiful creature and a wonderful find!
