Megaphorus minutus

Megaphorus minutus
Carolina Beach State Park, New Hanover County, North Carolina, USA
June 8, 2008
Size: 8-10 mm
A number of these small robber flies (size estimated 8-10 mm) were buzzing about a sandy trail on a very hot morning. Perhaps Megaphorus minutus? (Confirmed by Herschel Raney.)

Moved
Moved from Megaphorus.

Megas
Number four species known in NC. I am not sure this is minutus (though compare with Jeff's Florida shots, there is some slight sexual dimorphism in that species). It is not clausicellus. This leaves guildiana and laphroides if we rule out minutus. I will check key at home.

With the key these are minutus.
