Species of wasp or hornet? - Campsomeris - female

Species of wasp or hornet? - Campsomeris - Female
Fallon, NV, Nevada, USA
June 12, 2008
Size: 1.25-1.5 inches long
Saw this insect today. It was solitary on a rock and stayed there for quite a while exercising it's wings and expanding and contracting it's abdomen. It was much larger than the usual wasps I see around my backyard.
I thought it might be a queen.
Would really be interested in knowing what it is.
Thanks.

You're welcome.
Hey, it always helps to have images like yours that are at least in reasonable focus:-) Please keep posting, and thanks for sharing these.

wasp???
its not a hornet and im pretty sure its not a yellowjacket so that leaves wasp. but now the question is: what kind of wasp? possibly a sand wasp? this is a tough one! hopefully somebody will know for sure

the expanding and contracting of the abdomen is how they breathe.

Scoliidae.
This is a scoliid wasp in the genus Campsomeris, and a female. They are solitary, and as larvae are parasitic on the grubs of scarab beetles. Adult males look much different than females.
