There were lots of these flying low in the brush along the Linville River.

say more likely a: Dark Fishfly (Genus: Nigronia)
I don't know much about these so I could be wrong.

Hi Roger, and yes, GypsumWolf is correct, this is a Nigronia--there are only two species, and it may be possible to tell them apart, but I've never been sure. I've seen them along the Eno in May.
