Grapeleaf Skeletonizer - Harrisina americana - male

Grapeleaf Skeletonizer - Harrisina americana - Male
Hwy 55 and Sedwick, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
May 31, 2005
Size: 34 mm
Found at a lighted wall, an interesting finding for a day-flying moth, perhaps. Body length measured in place, and represents head to tip of abdomen (15 mm), it does not include antennae. Wing chord was just a bit more than body length, giving about a 34 mm wingspan. Hmm--this is a bit more than reported by Covell (1)--maximum 28 mm.

This individual has a very thin abdomen and more feathery antennae than others in the guide to date. I'm guessing it is a male, and most of the other images are of females.
