An amazing-looking creature - Megarhyssa macrurus
Waushara County, Wisconsin, USA
June 14, 2008
Size: 2.5 to 3 inches
I saw this early afternoon on a tree stump with its tail end in a hole. It was still there in the evening.

Moved
Moved from Giant Ichneumons.

Megarhyssa
There are several images of females ovipositing. I didn't know that it took hours though.

They sometimes get their ovipositor stuck
in the wood and are trapped there, which may account for the long time period.
